One button call will bring you police help

WOMEN in distress can now reach the Delhi Police with just a press of a button on their mobile phone.
After facing criticism for their time- consuming process in helping women in distress, which includes receiving a PCR call and forwarding it to the nearest PCR van, police have come up with a new technology for better and quick response.
mobile phone In the new system, a person will have to press a button on the mobile phone. After a user presses the button, calls will be made to five to six numbers, including 100.
“ A user will have to download a software available online. After the software is downloaded, it will be connected to a particular button on the mobile phone. The button will be connected directly to 100 and five to six other numbers chosen by the user. In case of panic, a user will have to press the button and a message will be sent to the PCR and other contacts attached to the button,” said a police officer explaining the software.
Once the message is sent from a particular number, the operators deployed in the control room will track the location of the caller and help will be sent to him or her, the officer added.

Delhi Police are starting a pilot run next week to see the response of the system. “ We will start with installing this software in a few phones to see how it works,” said T. N. Mohan, Special CP operations.
There can be pros and cons to the software as it can be misused as well. This is why we want to do a pilot run before we finally make it public. We are currently in talks with the software providers on testing the software, he added.
The recommendation of having a system of push button was suggested by the Usha Mehra Commission in February. Justice Mehra, a retired judge of the Delhi High Court, had said, “ A  system should be put in place in which there should be a push button in mobile phones through which family or police could be reached immediately when anyone is in distress. The push button should function even if there is no battery in the phone.”
