Pallekele: The one-off T20 between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was abandoned due to rain at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Sri Lankan openers Tillakaratne Dilshan (2*) and Dilshan Munaweera (4*) had played two overs, in chase of a 72-run target, when the heavens opened up.
Earlier, New Zealand struggled to score 74-7 against Sri Lanka after being put in to bat in the one-off Twenty20 international, reduced to 14-overs-a-side due to rain, which interrupted the match on several occasions.
Medium-pacers Thisara Perera and Nuwan Kulasekara and 19-year-old spinner Akila Dananjaya each bagged two wickets for Sri Lanka. The first six batsmen failed to go past double digits before Andrew Ellis (16) struck a few lusty blows alongside Jacob Oram (10).
Tim Southee top-scored for New Zealand with an unbeaten 21, including four boundaries in an over off Shaminda Eranga. The Kiwis eventually finished with a score of 74/7. The Duckworth-Lewis revision meant that Sri Lanka needed to score 72 runs to win.
